Alix's Story

Hi my name is Alix. About seven years ago, my family and I received scary news. I was diagnosed with a chronic illness -- Ulcerative Colitis. I was 7 years old at the time and had to go through invasive testing at the hospital to conclude that I'll most likely spend a lifetime taking medication daily to manage difficult symptoms. Also, I have an increased chance for colon cancer.

Ulcerative colitis is a chronic disease that causes inflammation in the colon or large intestines. Symptoms range from mild to severe, and sufferers require medication and often surgery for relief. Thankfully, right now my medicine and diet are keeping my symptoms under control. But, because this disease is so unpredictable, my UC can flare up without warning. It's very frustrating for me when I'm just trying to go to school and do all the kinds of normal things that kids my age do.

I have had to be strong and learn how to advocate for myself at school when my symptoms get in the way of learning and extracurricular activities. It is shocking to me that so many people are faced with this horrible disease and there is still no cure. At the same time, I am amazed that there are so many wonderful people who run raising money for research to find a cure. I am excited to play a role in Team Challenge this year and to work with you through training. Together, let's raise awareness and funding for CCFA!
