Cheri Wexler will be Team Houston's Honoree for the 2011 Half-Marathon Season!

My name is Cheri Wexler and I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease in October of 2004. I was only 25 years old and the idea of living with this incurable disease for the rest of my life was terrifying. I was diagnosed when I was in my third year of law school. I ended up taking a year off while my doctor worked to get my disease under control.
After trying numerous medications to control the disease that either didn’t work or caused serious side effects there was no other choice but to begin Remicade infusions. At the time, Remicade was the medication of last resort. While the medication worked and I was given a sense of normalcy, I knew that Remicade would not work forever. There would come a time when my body developed an immunity to Remicade, and I was worried no alternatives would exist. Luckily, through research more medications have become available, so I am not out of options.
Ultimately, I finished law school and passed the Bar. However, I quickly realized I needed a career that allowed me flexibility for the many doctor’s appointments and procedures that go along with having IBD. I now own my own event planning company and feel I found my true calling. For all the bad Crohn’s disease brought to my life, I feel truly blessed to be able to live my life despite the disease.
Because of your support and commitment, I have hope that one day we will find a cure for IBD. Thank you for being a part of such a great cause. I look forward to cheering you on to the finish line in Las Vegas!
