FAQ
- I’ve never done anything athletic in my entire life, can I even do a triathlon?
Of course you can and that’s what makes working with Team Challenge even better than doing a triathlon on your own! When you join, you’ll be with people of all athletic backgrounds - many who have also never completed a triathlon!
Our coaches ensure that you are fully prepared to swim, bike and run by giving you a great training schedule and informative group instruction. We have a 99.7% race day success rate with people of all shapes, sizes, ages and athletic backgrounds crossing the finish line! YOU CAN DO THIS!
- I’m not a very good swimmer, how often should I swim?
Our coaches suggest that you swim at least 1-2 times per week. Luckily, each team meets for swim practice once a week and participants practice in groups of similar abilities. We've had people barely able to cross the pool at week one finish the race at the end of the season. YOU CAN DO THIS!
- How does a triathlon work? What are the distances? Am I doing an Ironman!?
TriRock San Diego and TriRock Clearwater offer sprint and intermediate distance triathlons. No Ironman distances here!
You will swim, then bike, then run the following distances (approximate):
Sprint – Swim: 500 meters, Bike: 11 miles, Run: 3.1 miles
Intermediate – Swim: 1500 meters, Bike: 12 miles, Run: 6 miles
- How much time do I need to commit to training?
Your coach will give you a weekly schedule of your workouts so you'll know exactly what you need to do and the time commitment will vary over the course of the season. Since everyone has a different level of experience, we have different training schedules for beginner, intermediate and advanced athletes.
To learn more about what your local team's coach includes in his/her training schedule, contact your local team manager or join them at an information session.
If there will be times when you are on vacation or not able to train regularly, don't stress! Your coach and manager will work with you to keep you on track even when you're away!!
- What kind of equipment do I need and isn’t it expensive?
Triathlon equipment costs vary greatly but you certainly don't have to spend an arm and a leg! Most new triathletes will start out with the basics before deciding if they want to spend more money on the sport.
Swim – swim suit, goggles, towel. We have a great deal with team sponsor Xterra if you're interested in purchasing a swimming wetsuit - not manditory!
Bike – a new or used bike is great! The courses at TriRock San Diego and TriRock Clearwater are incredibly flat and almost any bike will allow you to complete the race. Some participants elect to buy a brand new bike and others will use a friends or purchase a used one online! Your coach and staff can help you make an informed decision no matter your budget.
Mandatory: A helmet, Cycling shorts, jerseys, cycling shoes and other accessories will help your comfort and efficiency but are all optional accessories. Team Challenge partners with local vendors and sponsors to make such purchases as discounted as possible!
Run – running shoes and clothing will help prevent injury and wick moisture while running or walking.
